Books and research is one of the most important resources in Going Medieval. In the game, you will have to research and create physical research book items in order to learn new things. As with any physical item, this means you will have to store them somewhere. There is a bookshelves furniture item that is unlocked through research as well. This guide will show you what you can do with the bookshelf item and give you some ideas on where you can store your chronicles and books.
How to Unlock and Build Bookshelves
In order to unlock and be able to build bookshelves in your colony, you will have to complete the required research. To begin with, you will have to build a basic research table. Then, after producing enough chronicles to unlock research you can essentially ‘buy’ it with your books. (If this is all still confusing check out this guide to how research works in Going Medieval). The research task that has to be completed in order to unlock the wall bookshelf is called Decorative Structures.
In order to research this you will need to have a total of 45 chronicle in your colony. This is because you must complete the research for the furniture and architecture first. All three of these research items cost 15 each. Once you have unlocked the bookshelf you are able to start building it!
What is the Wall Bookshelf Used For?
The wall bookshelf is categorized under the miscellaneous group. Unfortunately you cannot actually store any books or research on the bookshelf. That being said, the wall bookshelf isn’t just there to look pretty! The bookshelves actually serve another very useful purpose. In Going Medieval when you place certain furniture in a room you can change the entire room type. For example if you place 2 or more beds in a room it will become Shared Bedroom. Once a room is changed into a type it will have certain bonuses. When you place 2 wall bookshelves and a research table in the same room it will become a library.
Once a research table is placed inside a library the work speed of the research increases. The multiplayer for research table being in a library is 120%. There are other rooms that can be created to boost other types of facilities. For example you can create temples for each of the religions and workshop areas. You can press the V key to see all of the rooms available to build.
Other than just a regular furniture piece, this is the only use of the wall bookshelf.
Storing Books and Chronicles
Just like every other material and item you will have to store your research. This includes all of the books and chronicles that your settlers produce at the research tables. Keep in mind that these will need to be well protected. If raiders manage to destroy your research item it can set your research back days or even weeks. If your books are destroyed you will have to reproduce all of the ones that were destroyed before you can learn anything else.
There are a few good places to store books in. For example, you could build a cellar in your research lab just for books. You will have to store them inside your buildings otherwise they will deteriorate. Otherwise, storing books is just like storing anything else. You can create stockpile zones that ONLY include research items if you want a specific area. You can check out this guide on how to create stockpile/storage areas to learn how that works.
