One of the most important parts about your colony in Going Medieval is defending it! This is especially true of you’re gone for a harder difficulty. Raids will come quick and often! Your settlers are going to need weapons to defend themselves against attackers! This guide will show you how to equip your settlers!
How to Equip Weapons on a Settler
By default, your settlers will no just go about and grab a weapon. You will have to manually assign or tell them to do so. To have a settler equip a weapon go through the following steps:
- Acquire a weapon through crafting/raids/starting with one
- Select the settler you want to equip the weapons
- Right-click the weapons you want them to equip
- Select the option “Equip *weapon name*“
- Your settler will move to the weapon and equip it to themselves
Once you’ve completed the above steps, the settler will use the weapon you have assigned to them. This is known as force-equipping. Unless this weapon breaks, they will never pick up another one. You can tell your settlers to equip a weapon whether they are drafted or not.
Some weapons will have a melee skill requirement. This means that your settler’s melee skill will have to be a certain number before you are able to have them equip this weapon. The same goes for some ranged weapons with the marksman skill. They will have to use more basic weapons in these categories before they can equip the good stuff.
Managing Your Settler Weapons/Auto-Equip Weapons
Telling each settler which specific item to equip isn’t the only way you can ready them for battle in Going Medieval. You can also set specific rules on which types of weapons they carry. If you look at the top of the UI you can see a menu called the Manage menu. Here, you will be able to customize which types of things you settlers equip, what armor they wear and even what things they consume. You can set rules up for the types of weapons they equip.
In the image above, you can see I am managing the weapon of Maccus. As Maccus is one of the best marksmen of my colony, I will assign him to pick up a Ranged weapon. If this is type of weapon is assigned to him, he will automatically pick up the best ranged weapon we have in the stockpiles. You can use these categories to have your settlers swap out broken or bad quality weapons and armor.
By selecting the Edit option from the drop-down menu you can even go into more detail about which items to equip and unequip. For example you can tell your settlers to only equip weapons that are of Fine quality or better. Another use case is that you can tell settlers to find a new weapons when theirs becomes lower than 10 hit-points remaining. That way you will not risk a weapons breaking mid-fight.
Which Weapons Should My Settlers Equip?
You might be wondering which weapons to equip. This will depend on your settler. Each settler will have different skills in Going Medieval. For combat there are two different skill levels, Melee and Marksman. Melee means any weapons you hit people with and the marksman skill relates to ranged weaponry like bows and crossbows. Depending on your settler’s skill levels, you should equip them with weapons accordingly. You should always have your best marksman with your bows.
To check a settler’s skills, select them and click on the icon that is a star. This will show you a lift of all of their skills. The starts within this menu relate to how fast a skill can be learned. If the settler has 2 stars, they will learn the skill at a very fast rate. You can see how good they are in each skill by checking the number on the right side.
So we’ve gone over how to equip weapons with your settlers in Going Medieval. I’ve also gone through how to set up specific rules about what weapons can be auto-equipped. Check out the manage menu and have a look at the different rules and items you can apply. It may take a while to manage each settler, but once they are automatically grabbing their own weapons and equipping armors it will be worth it!
