Are you chickens going hungry on your farm in Stardew Valley? Well, that’s because they need to eat some hay of course. To feed chickens in Stardew Valley to into their Chicken Coop and place hay on the feeding trough. If you have a silo on your farm, you will be able to get hay straight out of the dispenser on the left side of the coop.
That was the TL;DR on how to feed chickens but we will go in depth on how to get your feathery friends fed with this longer guide down below.
Feeding the chickens – A walkthrough
Once you have some chickens on your farm in Stardew Valley you will need to keep them fed for them to keep producing eggs for you, and to keep them happy of course! When you first get some chickens and a small coop you will need to manually go into the coop and give them their hay. Each chicken will need 1 unit of hay per day, otherwise they will be hungry and can die from malnutrition if they don’t get food for a few days in a row.
If you have the big coop and a silo, you can go into the coop and on the top right hand side of the coop you will see the hay dispenser. Simply collect the hay from here and disperse it onto the feeding trough. You can do this by collecting your hay and then walking to each area of the feed troughs and right-clicking, or using the appropriate button on your controller. The chickens will automatically eat their food overnight.
If you have built a silo already you can grow and cut grass on your farm to acquire hay. This hay will be automatically available inside the coop to feed your chickens with. If you don’t have a silo you will have to manually store the hay somewhere and walk it into the chicken coop to spread onto the trough.
Getting Hay for your chickens
To get hay you will, as mentioned above, grow grass and once it is fully grown, cut it down with a scythe. You can do this to grass growing in places outside of your farm too. Another way to get hay in Stardew Valley is to go to Marnie’s Ranch when she is there and purchase hay directly from her.
Marnie’s Ranch can be accessed by going out of your farm to the south and walking to the first building on the right once you change areas. Once you go into her ranch you can purchase Hay to give to your chickens to keep them fed.
Letting the Chickens eat outside
Your chickens can also graze outside which will mean you don’t need to feed them any hay at all. This is good as hay can get rather costly if you have a lot of animals. To let your chickens go and roam around outside open up the small door just outside the coop as shown in the image below.
The chickens will be able to walk around outside so make sure you have a little fenced-in area outside the coop so they don’t go around your farm getting in the way. The chickens will not leave the Chicken Coop on rainy days or during winter days when they cannot graze and you will have to feed them hay to keep them going.
I hope this short guide has helped you to feed your chickens in Stardew Valley. If you have any more questions or are stuck on some part of the chicken feeding process let me know with a comment down below. Thanks!
