Along with being a simulation of medieval war and conquer, Mount and Blade: Bannerlord is, at its core, an RPG game. A part of being a sandbox RPG is that ability to make your own character and choose you own path. One of the mechanics of Bannerlord is the aging mechanic meaning your character will eventually die from old age.
Fear not however, this does not have to be the end. Even though your main starting character may perish, upon their death you will be able to play as any of the character’s family members. This can include your spouse, blood relations or children.
This guide will show you how to get married to another character in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord and afterwards, have children to act as an heir.

What Are Children Good For in Bannerlord?
You may be first wondering if you need to have a child in Bannerlord in the first place. Well, it isn’t a must-do but it will be very much in your interest. In Mount and Blade: Bannerlord your family has it’s own clan. Within this clan is your player character, their companions and your family members. You can expand this clan by having children. Once they reach the age of 16, they will become lords which can lead their own armies! Yes, free armies!
If you want to grow a large clan then you better believe having children is a good idea. That being said, it will take actually 16 in-game years for them to reach the maturity of becoming a character in the game. Speaking of aging, eventually your in-game character will pass from old age, or in battle. At that point, you can play the game as one of your family members. The more family members you have, the more characters to choose from. Plus why would you not want to start with as large of a clan as possible.
How to Get Married in Bannerlord
Before you can get on to having a child in Bannerlord, you will have to find yourself a MR or MRS to marry. There is no way to have children outside of marriage in Mount and Blade: Bannerlord, so you better be ready to tie the knot! First, find a nice possible spouse and make sure they are not already married to someone else. You can check their encyclopedia page by pressing on their name whilst in conversation, or by searching their name in the encyclopedia. This can be opened with the N key.
Now start’s the wooing. If you’re the romantic type, you can start to court this person by speaking about love and romance to them and passing all of the persuasion checks. Well, that’s the difficult way to do it. There is another way to get married without all the hard work.
What you need to do is approach the leader of the clan and ask to form an alliance through marriage. To do this, follow this conversation path;
- I have something I would like to discuss
- I would like to propose an alliance between our families through marriage
- My own hand
Through this conversation path you will offer your own hand in marriage to form an alliance with a clan. You success will depend on how much gold you have and how much reputation your clan has. Once you have given enough gold for the barter offer to be accepted, you will be married! Congratulations. Now comes the part where you can have some children.
How to Have Children With Your Spouse in Bannerlord
Now that we are married it’s time for the part where we make some kids! In Bannerlord this is a process which happens automatically in the game. To have children in Bannerlord, simply take your spouse into your party and roam around the map with them. It doesn’t seem to make a difference whether you wait around at a settlement or if you are just roaming around the map together fighting. Eventually the wife will get pregnant. Congrats!
A pregnant character in Bannerlord will eventually give birth to a child. This will be shown as a message at the bottom right of the screen. You will be able to name the child once they are born.
Improving Chance at Getting Pregnant
If your character isn’t making children fast enough for you there you will be happy to know there is a way to make this happen more common. There is a perk under the Charm skill which gives your character a 30% more likely chance to have a child. At level 25 charm you can take this trait called Virile.
