How to Get Salt in Going Medieval

One of the resource in medieval colony sim Going Medieval is salt! Just like in the middle ages, salt is an important resource to hang on to. With multiple different uses, you will need salt at some point in your colony. Figuring out how to get salt and what it can be used for can be a little difficult at first. Luckily, you have this guide!


How to Get Salt

In Going Medieval, salt is obtained by mining it directly from the ground. As with clay and iron, salt deposits will be scattered at random on the map. They can exist both on the surface layer and underground. To mine the salt and obtain it, find an area like in the picture below. Then, select the mine action and mark the salt deposit to be mined. Your settlers will now come over and mine this when it becomes a priority task. You can select a settler and right-click the deposit to have them mine it immediately.

As you can see in the image above, salt is very similar to other mineral deposits. It has a light brown color in the game and also shines against the light. You can see the mineral you currently have the cursor on in the bottom left of the screen. If you already have the mine action selected, you can also see a pop-up on the screen as above.


Storing Salt

As with other perishable items in Going Medieval, you will have to store salt in a place under a roof. If you don’t store your salt piles under a roof they will slowly start to deteriorate. You won’t have to do anything else special apart from storing salt inside and under a roof. Salt will never go bad like the food types. Try to make a stockpile relatively close to the kitchen as the main use of salt is as a preservative to create long-lasting foods such as pickled vegetables.


What is Salt Used for in Going Medieval?

As aforementioned in the last section of this article the main use of salt is as a preservative. You may have already seen in the research menu there are some topics on Preserving Food. Through these types of research, you will unlock recipes that have to do with salt. One such recipe is the Pickled Vegetables. With the Cooking research you will unlock this. you can create pickled vegetable at the hearth.

Firstly, select the hearth in your colony. Then, find the pickled vegetables product at the top of this menu. Selecting this will add it to the production queue. Once a product is in the production queue you are able to edit it a little. For example you can change how many you want to produce. You can create a set amount, keep a fixed amount in stock or create them forever. By pressing the Edit button you can also allow or disallow ingredients. As you can see in the image above, there are two different preservative ingredients to choose from. These are salt, and vinegar. You will need equal amounts of each so it down’t really matter which you choose.
