Wood is one of the most important resource in Going Medieval. From building structures and production facilities, you will need wood basically the entire game. Wood is one of the most versatile materials as it served so many purposes. Used as fuel, in construction and in other places, getting a good source of wood is essential. So how do you keep a source of wood? You plants trees of course!
How to Plant Trees – Going Medieval
In order to plant some new trees in Going Medieval you will have to complete some research items. Once you’ve researched the Agriculture research item you will be able to start growing some trees. Follow these steps to grow trees:
- Complete the research topic Agriculture
- Select the Zone building menu from the bottom of the UI (F7)
- Select the option for the *Vegetable* field
- Under Select Variant choose the Birch Tree crop
- Wait for your settlers to plant the trees and for them to grow
- Harvest your wood plantation
Once you have completed these steps you should have your own forest of birch trees. Your settlers will continue growing more trees here once the others have been harvested. You can only grow trees outside. They will not grow under roofs.
The trees can be planted right next to each other. This means that every tile within your painted grow area will have 1 tree planted on it.
How to Unlock Tree Growing
The first step in growing trees in Going Medieval is unlocking this first. To unlock any new items or mechanics in Going Medieval you must complete research tasks. This is done through creating book items and then using these books to unlock new things.
Once you have built your first research desk (the Basic Research Table), you will unlock the Research menu. This will appear at the top of the screen between Manage and Region. Select this menu and you will see all of the research items available to unlock. We want to complete the agriculture research.
Before you can unlock the agriculture research however you ill have to complete the architecture research item. Each of these items require you to have 15 chronicle each. In order to get chronicles to unlock research, you will have to have a settler write them. This is done at the basic research bench. Just select the research bench and add the chronicle job to the production queue as with any other production facility. You can read a full guide on research in Going Medieval here.
Once you have the required chronicles select the research task and choose the option to unlock the task. This will unlock the ability to grow fruit and vegetable patches.
Having Settlers Growing and Harvesting
In order to plant and grow trees in Going Medieval you will need settlers to do the job for you! Not all settlers will be able to grow and harvest plants efficiently however. You should try to have settlers prioritize jobs based on their skill levels. For example, if you have a settler who is very inexperienced with harvesting plants they will probably botch the plant harvests. This means for all of your waiting, watching your plants grow, you won’t get anything.
Select the Jobs menu from the top of the screen. Here you can decide which settlers are going to do which jobs. You will see already that some settlers are better at some tasks. A silver outline around a box means they are pretty good and a gold outline means they are fantastic. When a settler has high skill level with a certain job they will perform it faster and get a better yield than others. Better tailors will create better quality shirts.
The skill related to growing and the skill for cutting down trees are the same. For both Grow and Cut plants, your character’s Botany skill will be taken into account. As you can see in the image above, Wilfred is my colony’s best tree chopper. His Botany skill is a staggering 35, which makes him very efficient at his work. You can even remove the ability for the other colonists to cut trees if you wish. Just Right-click until there is no number in their priority box.
