One of the first things you might notice in Myth of Empires is the speed at which your character can move. With such a large map it can become very important to travel over large distances as quick as possible. Luckily, you have the ability to tame and ride horses in Myth of Empires.
This guide will show you everything you need to know about taming horses including which items to craft, how to actually tame horses and which levels and skills you will need to run a successful horse-taming business in-game!

Levels, Skills and Crafting Unlocks for Taming Horses
At the start of your adventure in Myth of Empires you won’t be able to tame any kind of mount. The game has a very detailed perk and crafting system. A lot of things are locked behind level progression as well. In fact, the first set of horse taming items will require you to be level 14 before you can unlock their crafting recipes.
The two crafting recipe sets that you will need to unlock to begin taming and riding horses are called Tamed Horse and Basic Saddle. You can find both of these crafting recipes under the Tame & Recruit heading. (This is the one with the whip as in the image above).
Once you have unlocked these crafting recipes sets you are able to start crafting the items you will use to tame your first mount!
Crafting Items for Horse Taming
Once we have unlocked the right recipes it’s time to get crafting! In order to tame a horse you are going to need an item called a Rein. These come in a variety of different types for different levels of horse. The most basic one you will be able to craft is called the Coarse Rein. This can tame horses at a low level.
To craft the Coarse Rein you will need to gather the following items:
- 8 Branch
- 3 Coarse Hide
- 1 Straw Rope
Branches can be obtained by hitting low level trees with an axe. Coarse hide can be gathered from low-leveled animals or broken down from higher-tier hide at the workbench. Straw Rope can be crafting in your character’s inventory with 4 Grass.
Once you have gathered all of these items you can craft your very own coarse rein. This is an essential item used to tame a horse in Myth of Empires. Without this, you won’t be able to catch a mount.
Coarse Dry Fodder For Distraction
Another item that is really going to help you to tame your first horse is the Coarse Dry Fodder. This is a type of food that can be used to distract horses so they can be snuck up on. To tame a horse, you will have to move all the way up to it undetected. This can prove a rather big challenge as the horse will wander around and turn their attention into different directions constantly.
By throwing down coarse dry fodder, the horse will be distracted and very easy to sneak up on. Trust me when I say this will make your horse-taming efforts dramatically easier. They are very easy to craft as well and can be thrown near the horse like a throwing weapon.
To craft some coarse dry fodder in your inventory you will just need 6 units of grass and 1 unit of bark. Very easy considering they will be distracted long enough for you to hitch a ride.
How to Tame the Horse in Myth of Empires
Now that we have all of the required materials for the operation we can move on to how to actually tame the horse. The tactic is you generally just want to sneak up on the horse without them detecting you. if a horse notices the player getting close they will get spooked and run away. What you want to do is sneak up on the horse with the Reins equipped and Press E to mount the horse. Then you will be able to gradually tame it.
Follow these steps to tame a horse:
- Equip the Coarse Rein and Coarse Dry Fodder
- Throw down some Coarse Dry Fodder to distract the horse
- Sneak up on the horse using Sneak Mode (C key to toggle this on)
- Press E when promoted to mount the horse
- Ride the horse and steer it away from danger until the Obedience meter has filled up completely
- If the horse goes into Berserk Mode you will need to press the left and right mouse buttons rapidly until the horse calms down
- Repeat this process until the horse is tamed
- Name your horse and equip a saddle to it
It may tame multiple attempt to tame some horses depending on their level and your character’s Tame skill level. This higher this skill level is, the faster the obedience meter will rise when taming animals.
Crafting a Saddle and Mounting/Riding the Horse
Now that you’ve managed to tame yourself a horse you will have to craft a saddle before it can be ridden. Unfortunately you cannot ride mounts bareback in Myth of Empires. At level 14 you can unlock this ability to craft the most basic saddle in the game. This is called the Coarse Light Saddle and can be crafted from your player inventory.
The only different between tiers of saddle are how many item slots are available on the horse when they are equipped so don’t worry too much about saddle tiers for now. Once you have crafted the saddle, move over to your tamed horse. You can open their inventory with the E key.
With the horse’s inventory open, click and hold to drag the saddle to the open saddle slot of your horse. This is on the right-hand side of this menu. You can check out the image below to see exactly where I am talking about.
Now that your horse has a saddle equipped, you can press the E key to mount them and start riding them around. Your character will gain experience in the Riding skill when they are riding around on a mount in the game. Your horse will also gain passive experience while you are riding it around.
How to Dismiss a Horse in Myth of Empires
If your horse falls in battle, you will have to craft and build the Stables to revive it again and get it back into the world. To dismiss a horse from your list of subordinates firstly press the Y key. This will open up the Subordinates menu. Now at this menu you can select the tab for Mounts shown at the top. This screen will display all of your mounts whether they are downed, around the world or at the stables.
Select the mount you wish to release and then select the button with the three lines on the left side of the screen (next to the horses name). From here you can see the option to Bury the horse. Be warned, once you have chosen to release your horse there is no way to get it back. Make sure you really want it gone before selecting this.
Taming a Horse in Myth of Empires: Video
In the video below you can watch me tame a horse in Myth of Empires from start to finish.
As you can see in the video, the horse is first mounted while it is being distracted by coarse dry fodder. The video also shows how a horse can go into Berserk Mode and require the mouse button minigame.
