Mistlands is one of the upcoming biomes for massively successful early access survival game Valheim. Even though the biome is not yet fully implemented into the game players can find this biome by travelling far enough away from the spawn point. There are some interesting things to find in the mistlands, one of them being the ancient root.
What are Ancient Roots?
The ancient root seems to be one of the new types of trees that will be available to explore and hopefully cut down with the Mistlands update for Valheim. Scheduled for this year, the update will fully implement new enemies, materials and a new forsaken boss to the game into the mistlands biome. If the player heads there now they will find some old bones which cannot be interacted with, very tall trees and some static spider webs.
When facing one of the giant roots coming from the ground the player will see the name, ‘Ancient Root’ coming from the object indicating that in the future the player will be able to interact with this material. It is expected that the player will be able to cut down these roots to earn themselves a new type of wood in the game.
The roots themselves bear similarities in name and shape to the ancient trees which can be found in the swamp. Perhaps from cutting down ancient root the player will be able to receive ancient wood instead of ancient bark? If this is true, ‘ancient wood’ would be the 5th type of wood that the player is able to use in Valheim.
How to Cut Down/Harvest Ancient Root
There is currently no way in Valheim to cut down ancient root. Using even the strongest available tools in the game, the player does not even damage the ancient root. It seems that full functionality of ancient root is being saved for the full release for the biome. this may be a good thing as players are already able to head to another unfinished biome, the ashlands, and harvest a resource known as flametal ore and melt it down into flametal.
We are expecting that you will need a very strong axe in order to cut down ancient root. Probably Iron level at least, but possibly even blackmetal if the developers want to make it into a very hard to access resource. Given that bronze level axe can cut down every available tree in the game I would personally expect that iron level will be sufficient.
When the update is release or another method of cutting down ancient root becomes available before the update, you can check back to this page to find out exactly how to get it done.
