Salt is one of the most important cooking items in Cryofall. From being able to dry out meat to just using at a base ingredient, a lot of recipes will need salt. As with everything in Cryofall there are certain places that salt can be found naturally. This guide will show you two places where you can get salt in Cryofall and what its uses are.
How to Get Salt in Cryofall
Creating food is very important for your survival in Cryofall. For a lot of recipes we are going to need salt. There are two really good ways that you can get salt in Cryofall, by mining it and by separating salt from salt water. Both of these are dependent on where you are in the world. For example, if you have build your base next to the ocean then you are just better off getting salt from boiling salt water. If you are on the east side of the map, you may want to consider going to a salt pit to mine salt.
Getting Salt from Salt Flats
There are a lot of different biomes and sub-biomes in Cryofall. You can see the map with the M key. With the map open when you point over the map you can see what type of biome that color is. There is a certain smaller biome that we are looking for known as the salt flats. These salt flats have large amounts of salt contained in them, if you can mine them out.
Have a look at the image above. This is known as a salt flat. Here you will find large salt deposits which can be mined using a pickaxe. Each salt rock you break up will give you around 14 salt. You will also gain a small amount of lithium salt when you break the rock up. Mining out a salt flat is the best way to get a large amount of salt quickly. The bonus here is you will also get a bit of lithium for your trouble. The hard part is, the area where salt flats are located can be very dangerous to the unprepared player.
Cryofall Salt Flats Locations
You can find all of the salt flats areas in the Barren biome. This is the large desert area that can be found on the east side of the map. Be careful when deciding to make the trip out here however, as there are some very dangerous creatures to be found in the barren. Below, you can see a map of the Cryofall world with all of the salt flats locations marked. You can also see an overview of the entire map by going to this page.
You can see that the salt flats are a slightly darker tone than the rocky mountains areas, but share size similarities. They are just smaller dots within another biome. Salt flats only exist within the barren area that you can see on the east side of the map. Simply go to one of these locations with a pickaxe, and mine some salt!
Getting Salt From Salt Water
Another method of obtaining salt is by evaporating salt water. For this we will need to make a bottle to begin with. You will first have to research how to craft a bottle from the technologies tab. Bottles are unlocked in the first tier of the Industry section. By researching the Glassware technology, you will unlock the ability to craft an use glass bottles.
You will have to have a forge in order to make the glass for the bottles as well. You will also need a workbench to craft the bottle on. So in total you will need:
- Workbench
- Furnace
- Cooking Stove
- Materials for building and crafting
The only real problem you should run into when crafting the glass is a good way to get ash. Luckily you can read this guide on how to get ash in Cryofall, which will make your life a little bit easier.
Now that you have all the items you need, get the glass and craft the bottle at the workbench. Make as many bottles as you can so you save yourself from doing too many trips back and forth. Every full bottle of salt water you collect, you will get 2 units of salt. Once you have your bottles head to any ocean beach. You will have to go to one of the side of the island in order to get salt water. Lakes will never give you salt water.
How to Get Salt Water
To get salt water, head to the side of the island with your empty bottles. Open up your inventory with TAB and drag the empty bottles to the quickbar at the bottom of the screen. This is the bar with numbered inventory slots. You can put a full stack of bottles here and fill them all at the same time. Now, equip the bottles by either left-clicking their icon on the bar or by pressing the corresponding number. With the bottles equipped walk to the water’s edge and press the left-mouse button on the water. You character will start to fill the bottles with salt water.
All of the bottles your had equipped will now be filled with salt water. Be careful not to drink this salt water as it will make you even thirstier and may make your character sick as well. Now, bring the salt water back to your base so you can begin to take the salt out.
Head over to your cooking stove and select the recipes button to find the recipe to make salt. You should see the salt icon from the selection of recipes available. See the image below. Your menu should also look like this. Select this as the recipe and then add your salt water bottles to the input section of your cooking stove. Add a fuel source such as twigs or charcoal and your salt will start to get processed. Every 30 seconds your salt water bottles will be processed into 2 units of salt and refund your empty bottle back. You won’t get any fresh water out unfortunately.
What is Salt Used For?
The main use of salt in Cryofall is cooking. Even in the early stages of cooking in Cryofall, salt is one of the ingredients that can be used. Many of the recipes at the cooking stove require salt as an ingredient. The main use of salt would be to dry things out.
